MAITLAND — The Ontario government is supporting an investment of more than $8.9 million by Evonik Canada Inc. to boost local manufacturing and create five new jobs, while retaining 29 other good-paying jobs in Augusta Township.

The company’s investment was announced at Evonik’s Maitland facility today by Steve Clark, MPP for Leeds-Grenville-Thousand Islands and Rideau Lakes and Douglas Woods, President of Evonik Canada.

“Our government is building a strong Ontario and creating the conditions for a stronger, growing economy by supporting key investments in our community,” said MPP Clark. “Evonik Canada’s investment provides a significant boost to our local manufacturing sector, as we continue to create good-paying jobs for workers and families in Leeds and Grenville.”

Evonik Canada’s investment includes the purchase of new equipment to manufacture new grades of hydrogen peroxide, allowing the company to expand their operations at its Maitland plant.

“Our government is proud to support local manufacturers across the province as they grow and expand their operations,” said Vic Fedeli, Minister of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade. “We thank Evonik Canada for their investment and for contributing to our province’s dynamic and growing manufacturing sector.”

In support of Evonik Canada’s investment, the Government of Ontario is providing Evonik Canada with $1,249,853 in funding through the Regional Development Program’s Eastern Ontario Development Fund for their project.

“Evonik is very appreciative of the Ontario government’s support of our efforts at the Maitland site,” said Douglas Woods, President of Evonik Canada. “I am confident this strategic investment will springboard additional growth for the company and the region.”

“The Leeds Grenville manufacturing sector is critical to our regional economy. The investment by Evonik and the Province demonstrates future growth opportunities in Maitland and the region while sustaining our strong workforce and its well-paying jobs,” said Nancy Peckford, Warden, United Counties of Leeds and Grenville.

“It is with great enthusiasm that we welcome this capital investment by Evonik Canada and the Government of Ontario within our industrial park,” said Jeff Shaver, Mayor, Augusta Township. “Investing in local manufacturing and jobs leads to new residents coming to our township and area communities. Augusta prides itself on having an ‘easy-to-do-business approach’ and applauds Evonik as a great corporate partner in the township.”

Ontario is investing $180 million through its Regional Development Program to help manufacturers across the province grow while supporting distinct regional priorities. To date, Ontario has supported more than 130 projects through the program, leveraging more than $1.8 billion in new investments and helping to create over 3,400 jobs.

QUICK FACTS

  • As part of the 2023 Ontario Budget, the government is proposing a new Ontario Made Manufacturing Investment Tax Credit, which would provide a 10 per cent refundable Corporate Income Tax credit to help local manufacturers lower their costs, invest in workers, innovate and become more competitive.
  • The government launched the Regional Development Program for Eastern and Southwestern Ontario in November 2019. Businesses and municipalities can get financial support through the Eastern Ontario Development Fund and Southwestern Ontario Development Fund and guided access to a range of complementary services and supports.
  • In 2022, the Advanced Manufacturing & Innovation Competitiveness (AMIC) stream of the RDP was launched to support advanced manufacturers across the province. Ontario is now providing additional funds to enhance the AMIC stream by providing more firms with the financial support and tools needed to improve competitiveness, while strengthening essential supply chains.
