Governments invest over $6.7 million in Leeds-Grenville-Thousand Islands and Rideau Lakes water infrastructure projects

Leeds-Grenville-Thousand Islands and Rideau Lakes— Investments in key infrastructure projects build strong and healthy communities across Canada. From roads and community centres – to public transit and water and wastewater systems – reliable infrastructure provides communities with opportunities to grow and develop today so that they can be resilient in the face of tomorrow.

That is why both levels of government have been taking decisive action to support families and businesses, while boosting economic growth, improving quality of life, creating jobs, and building strong, healthy communities across the province.

Today, MPP Steve Clark, announced $6,714,635 in joint funding for three projects in Leeds-Grenville-Thousand Islands and Rideau Lakes to improve drinking water infrastructure.  

“I am very pleased to announce today that our government will be investing over $3 million, right here in Leeds-Grenville, to help our municipal governments maintain and improve our local drinking water infrastructure.  This investment is part of our governments broader strategy to invest over $148 billion over the next 10 years to support the construction, rehabilitation and modernization local infrastructure. Our government is building new schools, hospitals, public transit, roads, bridges, and working to connect rural Ontarians with reliable high-speed internet,” said Steve Clark, MPP for Leeds-Grenville-Thousand Islands and Rideau Lakes.

“I’m proud to work with my provincial counterpart MPP Steve Clark to secure substantial funding for important drinking water infrastructure projects here in Leeds-Grenville and to support our municipalities across the region who are providing safe and clean drinking water to our community. I’m pleased that I was able to advocate for the investment of over $3.5 million in federal funding that will support our community in maintaining the safety and sustainability of our water treatment systems and the quality of service that our residents deserve” said Michael Barrett MP for Leeds-Grenville-Thousand Islands and Rideau Lakes.

Town of Prescott is receiving $5,086,169 in joint funding to erect a new elevated water tower and all appurtenances to make the elevated tower functional and includes the demolition of the existing elevated water tower

Township of Edwardsburgh-Cardinal is receiving $1,547,510 in joint funding to replace the watermain and 3 fire hydrants for new service to 27 properties, including one apartment complex along County Rd 2

Village of Westport is receiving $80,956 in joint funding to install a new propane power generator for the Westport Drinking Water System

The Government of Canada is contributing $3,662,694.

“Today’s green infrastructure investments will bring long-lasting benefits to thousands of residents across Ontario. These 144 projects will provide increased access to clean water, improve the reliability of our water systems, and protect health and safety” said the Honourable Kinga Surma, Ontario’s Minister of Infrastructure. “This investment is just one of the many ways our government is building a cleaner, more sustainable Ontario for today, and for generations to come.” 

These projects are a part of a joint investment towards 144 water infrastructure projects across Ontario that will provide residents with safer and more reliable drinking water and drinking water infrastructure. The Government of Ontario is providing more than $140.5 million in these projects, Infrastructure Canada is investing more than $190.2 million, while recipients are contributing more than $108.5 million.

QUICK FACTS

•            The provincial government is providing $3,051,940 and the federal government is providing $3,662,695 for a combined investment of $6,714,635 through the Green Infrastructure Stream of the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program.

•            Under the Investing in Canada Plan, the federal government is investing more than $180 billion over 12 years in public transit projects, green infrastructure, social infrastructure, trade and transportation routes, and Canada’s rural and northern communities.

•            Over the last six years, the Government of Canada has invested over $18.6 billion toward more than 4,180 infrastructure projects across Ontario.

•            During that period, over $44 billion has been invested in communities by Infrastructure Canada across the country to support world-class infrastructure projects, including over $4.4 billion for community drinking water and wastewater infrastructure projects.

•            Ontario is investing over $10.2 billion under the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program to improve public transit; community, culture and recreation; green, and rural and northern community and other priority infrastructure.

•            Over the next 10 years, Ontario has planned infrastructure investments of over $148 billion to support the construction, rehabilitation and modernization of new schools, hospitals, public transit, roads, bridges, and access to quality, reliable high-speed internet.

•            These investments are part of the Ontario government’s plan to build Ontario by getting shovels in the ground on critical infrastructure projects that will stimulate job creation and boost economic growth, while protecting health and safety to build strong, resilient communities.

•            Infrastructure Canada helps address complex challenges that Canadians face every day—ranging from the rapid growth of our cities, to climate change, and environmental threats to our water and land.
